National Guard Memphis deployment: Governor Lee maps multi-agency crime plan as mayor balks

Gov. Bill Lee detailed a multi-agency plan for Memphis that could include the Tennessee National Guard, FBI, THP, and Memphis Police to build on Operation Viper. He’s been coordinating for months with the Trump Administration and plans to finalize roles soon. Memphis had 390 homicides in 2023, though police say crime is down this year. Mayor Paul Young says he did not request the Guard and questions its effectiveness.
